Just when you thought Bose had a pair of earbuds for every occasion, they went on and released the first pair of noise-masking sleep buds. Basically, headphones designed for sleeping.
The company’s experience in noise-cancelling technology, the Sleepbuds are not made for listening to your Spotify playlist under the covers; They are designed specifically for bedtime and are designed to help you sleep better.
However, when Bose bared the sleep buds, the company made it clear that there was more than one sleep aid. It conducted research last year that showed that poor overall health and well-being are a terrible combination and that substantial sleep is as important to well-being as is exercise and nutrition.
And so sleep buds were made to fulfil Bose’s mission to improve our health by putting us in a comfortable, dreamy state. But are they worth the hefty price?
Bose Sleep Buds Price
You can buy the Sleep buds for $ 249.- on Amazon. You can also buy them at official Bose stores.
These are not cheap, but do they work? It has never been comfortable to sleep with headphones. As a result, the company has had a hard time answering this fairly hard-to-solve but straightforward problem.
Small, light and comfortable, and looks like a high quality, expensive product. In genuine Bose look, the earbuds are brilliantly processed and in any case, provide a premium label.
The Sleepbuds are available in a sturdy brushed aluminium case that charges the buds and provides 16 hours of usage.
Nonetheless, the case slides open in a smooth action to reveal the sleep buds, each scale at only 0.049 oz and measuring 0.39 x 0.39 inches, though this excludes the Rubber StayHear + Sleep Tip Noise Isolator.
If you take them out, you will immediately notice how small and light they are, which will undoubtedly make you wonder what you got for all your money. But if you put the buds in your ear, everything is forgotten. They are incredibly comfortable, and you really can’t tell that you are wearing them.
This compact design was made possible by the laser-etched sleep buds antenna, which is attached to the outside of each bud and connects it to an external device, in my case, a smartphone or tablet. That process obviously helped Bose to save space on the inside, keeping the buds small and almost weightless.
Setting the sleep buds back into the case is strangely satisfying. They slide with a magnet into their charging station and align perfectly on the charging plug. It’s these little design features that, while appealing, remind you how expensive they are.
Bose says creating the sleep buds was a massive engineering effort, as they not only blocked external sounds but needed to be comfortable enough to wear for a long time while you’re lying in bed, even on your side.
You can’t deny that. If the buds are placed correctly in your ear, which is the same as with other wireless earbuds, by putting the tip under the contours of your ear, they are completely unobtrusive, entirely comfortable and even unnoticeable for long periods like a whole night.
The Bose sleep app is easy to use, and the battery lasts just under 16 hours. You can only hear soothing sounds.
As mentioned earlier, the Bose Sleepbuds aren’t, like regular Bluetooth earbuds, intended for music playback. Instead, they help you drift off more relaxed by masking unwanted noise and replacing it with soothing sounds.
Therefore, Bose doesn’t allow you to connect them to your usual music streaming platforms, and they only work through a companion Bose Sleep & Apos app.
Just like the sleep buds themselves, the sleep app is really well designed and very easy to use. So much so that I expected a few more customizable options in the settings tab at the first inspection. But on closer look, I soon realised that everything needed is already there.
You can also decide if you want to set the alarm so that the earbuds can wake you up in the morning with a more traditional beep, which means you don’t need to set the alarm separately. An external device, if you are worried, the sleep buds would also mask that sound.
In My Opinion
The masking sounds cover external sounds very well, to the point where you can’t hear them at all. The environment in which I tested them is not exceptionally loud. Bose said they made sure that the garbage collectors went on unheard in the early morning. And that’s never a bad idea.
You can also set how loud you want these sounds to be; This soon becomes a balancing act between what you can’t perceive as potentially offensive noise and how loud you can go without the lingering sound possibly keeping you awake.
I found it too little to get a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, Bose has pre-set an ideal volume in the app for you if you’re not sure where to start.
There are only ten soothing sounds at the moment. Bose has said it will over time, add more of these sleep sounds to the app’s library.
Concerning battery performance, the juice dropped on averaged slightly more than half when used for a full night’s sleep.
That is at par with Bose’s projection of 16 hours of use per charge, just spot on.
The Bose sleep buds are exceptionally comfortable and beautifully designed. Because of their small size and lightweight design, they are not only ideal for sleeping but also muffle street noise, loud neighbours or a snoring partner, all with soothing sounds that help you sleep.
The only real problem here is the price. Selling at $ 249, they are quite expensive. The quality of the premium label Bose helps but doesn’t make you feel like you got much for your money.
And while some say that you can pay for a good night’s sleep, you should be aware that the sleep buds can’t guarantee that they will make you sleep happily night after night.
Yes, they assist with this process by helping you to relax with the soothing sounds of annoying distractions, but they are by no means a magical remedy for stopping sleep deprivation, for example, you have suffered from a sleep disorder for a long time.
Instead, the sleep buds may be better geared toward those who have never really had trouble drifting off in the past, but have recently experienced disruptions to what would typically contribute to a good night’s sleep, such as a new louder apartment, or perhaps as a travel companion, when sleeping in unknown places or getting on a plane.
Whatever it is, the Bose Sleepbuds is remarkably well made, extremely comfortable and do what it says on the tin.
